An entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign workers traveling to Canada by air is called electronic travel authorization – ETA. An ETA is linked electronically to a passport of a traveler. It is valid for about five years or unless the passport expires, whichever comes first.

Travellers Who Need An ETA
Visa-exempt foreign workers that need an ETA to fly or transit through a Canadian airport. These travellers don’t need an ETA when arriving by car, train, bus, or boat.
Lawful permanent residents of the US that need an ETA to fly or transit through a Canadian airport. They should present a valid green card and a valid passport at check-in.
Travellers' Eligibility To Apply For An ETA
Citizens from select visa-required countries might be eligible in order to apply for an ETA, instead of a visa, to travel to Canada by air.
Though, these travellers need a visitor visa when arriving by car, train, bus, or boat, including a cruise ship.
Travellers Who Cannot Apply
Canadian citizens and dual citizens need a valid Canadian passport. American Canadians could travel with a valid Canadian or US passport.
Canadian permanent residents need a valid permanent resident travel document or card and visa required including alien’s passport holders and stateless individuals.
